Drocchi on their mission, their events and Shakespeare\u2019s birthday celebrations.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><em>BY HANNAH GONZALEZ<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This April 23, William Shakespeare\u2019s birthday won\u2019t pass without its annual recognition from the Fundaci\u00f3n Shakespeare Argentina (\u201cArgentine\u00a0Shakespeare Foundation,\u201d FSA).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Bard\u2019s birthday will be commemorated on social media with a montage of video and artistic tributes by students, teachers and enthusiasts, all sent in to a foundation dedicated to bringing people together through the life and works of\u00a0Shakespeare. The English playwright is to be celebrated in the best possible way: through his art.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>SURE FOUNDATION<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fundaci\u00f3n Shakespeare Argentina was founded in 2011 by Mercedes de la Torre and Carlos A. Drocchi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>De la Torre, the organisation\u2019s president and a lawyer, says she first discovered Shakespeare through the theatre.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI wanted to look for a place where you could learn Shakespeare, and there wasn\u2019t one, so we created it,\u201d explains the 58-year- old. \u201cThere were Shakespearean institutions all throughout the world, except for in Latin America.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a necessary space for so many people, lovers of Shakespeare\u2019s work,\u201d she continues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Co-founder Drocchi, 63, is also the executive director of the FSA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe said, \u2018Well, we have to bring more people to Shakespeare, and [bring more people to] connect with Argentina through Shakespeare, and vice versa,\u2019\u201d he says, re-calling the organisation\u2019s founding.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Over the past 11 years, the organisation has hosted virtual and in-person events in Buenos Aires, participated in the Buenos Aires International Book Fair and put on two theatre productions (As You Like It in 2015 and Much Ado About Nothing in 2019) with\u00a0<\/em><em>its Compa\u00f1\u00eda de Repertorio de la Fundaci\u00f3n Shakespeare Argentina, among other accomplishments.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><em>The FSA\u2019s website also boasts scholarly articles and lectures, translated content, links to educational resources, and video compilations of birthday homages from years past.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>THIS IS MY BIRTH-DAY<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Since 2012, the FSA has brought their academic and Shakespeare-enthusiast communities together to celebrate the anniversary of the influential playwright\u2019s birth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe connect with many schools, with many professors, teachers, students, and they send us beautiful tributes,\u201d says de la Torre, noting that submissions for this year are already coming in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Shakespeare-lovers can take part in this year\u2019s compilation through a reading of a text, a recitation of a sonnet or monologue, a performance of a scene or through other artistic contributions, in English or Spanish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSometimes they\u2019re little drawings, sometimes it\u2019s a recitation&#8230; sometimes it\u2019s acting out a small scene,\u201d Drocchi listed. \u201cSometimes they are [from] actors who are studying performance, and they recite a monologue.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Submissions will be released on the foundation\u2019s social media starting April 23.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ALL THE WORLD\u2019S A STAGE<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Though this year is Shakespeare\u2019s 458th birthday, the playwright\u2019s influence is as alive as ever in contemporary society, argues Drocchi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Citing examples, he pointed to the 2012 London Olympic Games Opening Ceremo- ny, which was inspired by Shakespeare\u2019s The Tempest, and Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s March 2022 speech in which he quoted Hamlet (\u201cTo be or not to be\u201d).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShakespeare is present in the entire world, in every culture, and that brings us closer as human beings,\u201d says Drocchi. \u201cOne culture to another.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See PDF:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shakespeareargentina.org\/wpx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/FSA-en-el-diario-Buenos-Aires-Times-23-de-abril-de-2022-.pdf\">FSA en el diario Buenos Aires Times 23 de abril de 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See the article on\u00a0<strong>Buenos Aires Times Website:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.batimes.com.ar\/news\/culture\/argentinas-shakespeare-foundation-ready-to-celebrate-the-bards-birthday.phtml\">https:\/\/www.batimes.com.ar\/news\/culture\/argentinas-shakespeare-foundation-ready-to-celebrate-the-bards-birthday.phtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our gratitude to Hannah Gonzalez,<strong>\u00a0Buenos Aires Times<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Perfil Newspaper<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Argentina\u2019s Shakespeare Foundation ready to celebrate the Bard\u2019s birthday FSA founders Mercedes de la Torre and Carlos A.
